Artificial intelligence (AI), this technology has become ever more advanced and ever more present in society. There is a lot of understandable concern as to the ramifications of AI becoming more common and advanced. I share some of these worries, but I am not panicked over AI.
There is too much hysteria over AI. Some people seem to believe that this technology will rule our lives and be so pervasive in society that it could disrupt humanity beyond repair. If that happens, it will take quite a while, maybe hundreds of years.
My point of view is that AI will follow the same path that many predict technology like laptops to follow in the near future. I share the view that technology in the near future (50-100 years) will be based on the same foundation that we have today with two significant changes. 1) Our technology will, as technology always does, become faster, more compact, more efficient and more accessible. 2) Technology that we recognize will be everywhere in forms that we could never have imagined. I see no reason why AI wouldn’t follow this same path.
I have 2 real worries about AI
- Even if it happens in 200 years, I worry that AI will slowly, without humans realizing it, get to a point of no return where we lose control. I don’t think it will happen soon, but it worries me.
- I think that AI and automation in different jobs are going to significantly disrupt labor markets, soon. I am going to write an extended essay on this topic because it is worth a longer discussion. The negative and positive disruption of labor markets because of AI deeply worries me.
I want to end by saying that I am totally for technology and its advancements, but it is important for all of us to discuss and be aware of these issues.
