The following is an extended version of a free verse poem that I wrote (and posted on Instagram). The poem may also appear in a book of poetry in the near future.
I might have been you by William Kahraman
I might have been you.
Although it seems
strange, we aren’t all
that different. I know you
don’t want to believe this now,
but, our lives just took
The lanterns were always
lit for me, the small fires guiding me.
I hope you didn’t fear my path.
I never feared yours. I know,
you might think I am proud.
I am not. I hope you are. Please
know that I could have been you.
